Unit 7 - Creative packaging
For this unit, we had to create packaging to accompany an artist exhibition, the box had to include information about the artist and exhibition as well as their work and some free items with themed branding. I chose to use Higgins & Co tattoo studio in Eastbourne. I focused mainly on the owner (Chris Higgins) and 1 other tattoo artist (Valeria Marinaci) Their work is very different from each other, Chris specialises in mainly black work tribal tattooing, whereas Valeria's work is colourful and cute. The contrast between the artists works very well together. I used Chris' work for the main box theme, focusing on black and white and patterns. I then used Valeria's work as the focus for the free items.
These were the original ideas for the box before production. I ended up having to change the proportions of the box to accommodate the size of the free items. This led to me redesigning the layout of each inner tab of the box. I also couldn't use the original net design as it was too large for an A3 page, A3 was the maximum size I could print using heavy enough paper. In the end I designed each side panel separately and made tabs to glue them to the base of the box.
I found a box net idea called an 'exploding box' when the lid is lifted, the sides fall down, revealing information about the exhibition.
This unfortunately made the box sides slightly flimsy as it was not possible to print on heavier paper at that size.
I used bright colours to match with Valeria's art style, I used her tattoo flash designs to make a colouring book using the Image Trace function on Illustrator.
